Taman Ayun Temple

Seminyak to Taman Ayun Temple will take about 45 minutes drive , Taman Ayun Temple is situated in Mengwi Village of Badung District, around 18 km to the west of Denpasar. It is a very beautiful temple, as the name tells (Taman Ayun means temple in a beautiful garden). In addition to its beauty, Taman Ayun Temple is also considered to have historical values, which makes the regional government of Bali suggests the UNESCO in 2002 that this temple is included in World Heritage List
Taman Ayun Temple is a Mother Temple (Paibon) to Mengwi Kingdom. This temple was built by Mengwi King, I Gusti Agung Putu, in the Javanese year of 1556 (1634 AD). Initially, I Gusti Agung Putu built a temple to the north of Mengwi village to the worship of his ancestors. The temple was named Genter Park. When Mengwi grew into a big kingdom, I Gusti Agung Putu moved Genter Park eastward and expand the compound. The expanded temple was officially declared Taman Ayun Temple on Kliwon Tuesday – Medangsia the fourth month in the Javanese year of 1556. Until today, each Kliwon Tuesday of wuku Medangsia in Javanese calendar (Saka), a piodalan (ceremony) is held in this temple to celebrate the temple’s anniversary.

Taman Ayun Temple has gone through a number of restoration works. Large scale restoration was implemented in 1937. In 1949, restoration work was done to the kori agung (the grand room), Bentar temple. A big wantilan was also constructed during the time. The third restoration was implemented in 1972, followed by the final restoration in 1976. Taman Ayun Temple complex is 100 meters in length and 250 meters in width. The complex comprises an outer court and three inner courts. The inner courts, sided with stone fences, have different elevations, and the inner most is the highest one.

The outer court Taman Ayun Temple, also known as Jaba, is situated at the outer side of the pool. There is a bridge over the pool to connect the outer court to the inner ones. At the end of the bridge, on the inner court side, there is a Bentar gate followed by a pathway leading to the inner courts. There are two giant statues at each end of the bridge.

At the left side of the pathway Taman Ayun Temple, near the gate, there is some sort of a small guardhouse. Here, at the first inner court, there is a Wantilan (a sort of hall) at which some ceremonies usually take place, including a cockfight, which is also part the ritual ceremonies at the temple. There is a pathway lying across the first inner court and dividing it into two parts, connecting the gate into the first inner court to the one into the second inner court. To the southwest, there is a round gazebo at which one can have a rest and enjoy the beauty of the temple. There is a pond near the gazebo covered with water lilies. Right at the center of the pond, there is a small post that sprinkles water to nine different directions. To the east, there is a cluster of small temples called Luhuring Purnama Temples.

There is a gate at the end of the pathway Taman Ayun Temple dividing the first inner court into two. The gate leads to the second inner court, which is situated on a higher ground than the first one. Across from the gate, on the second inner court, there is a building functioning as a partition. The partition Taman Ayun Temple decorated with relief sculpture depicting nine guardian gods of compass points.

To the east, there is a small temple called Dalem Bekak Temple. To the west, around the corner, there is a balai Kulkul with its roof rising high. The third inner court, which is also the inner most and the highest one, is the most sacred area. Its main door, which is called pintu gelung, is placed right in the middle and it is opened only during ceremonies. The main door, however,Taman Ayun Temple is flanked by two gates through which people can access the court to do daily routines at Taman Ayun Temple. The court houses several Merus, a temple, a Gedong, a Padmasana, a Padma Rong Telu, and other religious buildings.

History of Uluwatu Temple

There are two different opinions concerning the history of Uluwatu Temple.

First Opinions, Some people believe that the temple was built by Empu Kuturan in 9th AD, during Marakata’s reign.
Second Opinions, Other people claim that the temple was built by Dang Hyang Nirartha, a pedanda (Hindu monk) from Daha Kingdom (Kediri) in East Java. Dang Hyang Nirartha came to Bali in 1546 AD, during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong. The monk built Uluwatu Temple on Pecatu Hill. After completing a spiritual journey around Bali, the monk went back to Uluwatu Temple and died there. He moksa (died and his body vanished), leaving the Marcapada (worldly life) and entering Swargaloka (heaven).

The Piodalan or ceremony commemorating the temple’s anniversary is held on Anggara Kasih day, in wuku Medangsia in Caka calendar. Usually the ceremony lasts for three days thronged by of thousands of Hindus.

Uluwatu Temple sits on a 70-meter-high cliff protruding above Indonesian Ocean. Because of its unique location, visitors to the temple have to take a long stone stairway to reach it. The temple heads east, unlike other Balinese temples which face west or south. There are hundreds of monkeys roaming along the path outside the temple. Although the monkeys look tame, visitors find them a nuisance as they often grab food off a visitor’s hand and snatch visitors’ belongings. There are two doors at the end of the path, the north door and the south one, through which visitors enter the temple complex.

The entrance doors take the shape of stone Bentar gates. Standing across from each gate, there are two statues of elephant-headed men. The front part of the gate is decorated with fine relief sculpture picturing leaves and flowery patterns. Behind the gate, there are stone steps that lead to the inner court. Along the steps, trees are grown to provide shade.

A small forest lies at the front and hundreds of monkeys dwell here. They are believed to guard the temple from bad influences. The serpentine pathway to the temple is fortified by concrete walls on the cliff side. It takes about an hour to get from one end to another as there are several fenced points along the way to stop. The views from the bottom of the water surging up against rocks and the ocean horizon are remarkable.

The Balinese Hindus believe that the three divine powers of Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva become one here. That belief results in making Uluwatu Temple a place of worship of Siva Rudra, the Balinese Hindu deity of all elements and aspects of life in the universe. Uluwatu Temple is also dedicated to protect Bali from evil sea spirits.

The inner court is an open space paved with stone floor. There is a wooden building near the north gate. To the west, across from the entrance path, there is a Paduraksa Gate that opens the path into the next inner court. Unlike the ones found outside, this stone gate is completed with roof. The door is an arch framed with an arrangement of stones.There is a sculpture of a giant head above the frame. The top of the gate looks like a crown and it is decorated with relief sculpture. The gaps between the gate and the walls are filled with a surface full of relief sculpture. There is a small rectangular court to the south that stretches out above the sea. There is a wooden construction at the end of the court that seems to be a place where people can sit and watch the ocean. Uluwatu Temple has undergone several restorations. In 1999, a lightning struck the temple and caused fire.

Every six months according to the Balinese 210-day Pawukon cycle, big temple anniversary celebrations are held at the temple. The temple’s keeper, the royal family of Jro Kuta from Denpasar, are patrons for the event. Believers regard it as a manifestation of the divine power that protects Uluwatu Temple. Public facilities are available, but not in the temple area. Unlike some other tourist destinations in Bali, Pura Uluwatu area has limited amounts of hassling vendors.

Visitors must wear a sarong and a sash, as well as appropriate clothes common for temple visits. They can be hired here. The best time to visit is just before sunset. Kecak and fire Dance is performed everyday at the adjacent cliff-top stage at 18:00 to 19:00. Visitors are charged a nominal fee, the ticket around USD 10/person or 100.000 IDR as a flat rate converter. What makes it the most favourite venue to watch a Kecak dance is the sunset background of the performance.

History Tanah Lot Temple :

Dang Hyang Nirartha” or better known as Pedanda Sakti Wau Rauh” that came from the region of Blambangan, East Java to Bali Island around the 16th century. At the time of the Reign of King Dalem Waturenggong in Gelgel, Bali. Later, he held a sacred journey (Dharmayatra) and walk down the south coast of the Bali Island from the western to the eastern regions. Yes, we start our journey at 01.00 am from Seminyak and drive up to the north within 2 hours drive we made it to arrive at the start point trekking at Batur Volcano.

Arrive on the dark time arround 03.15am , friendly guide welcome us on their basecamp. And here we have to purchase the Guide services to do trekking at Batur Volcano with Guide Price 400.000 idr per person of us and that is included Breakfast, Donation , taxes, insurrance,also Guide fee. Its writen on board information that the price is valid from 1st January 2016 until 31st December 2016. And also there is a rule every guide has maximum companion with only 4 person guest. We our group more then 4 person, then we have 2 person of trekking guide services at the time we are there.

The guide provide us all the facilities we need as a torch or flash light, glove, rain code, also the stick for help us to walk on rock side. We start the trekking at 03.20am and walk slowly, the temperature getting coulder after view hundred meter we walk up so lucky we prepare jacket and heater and for you don’t miss the jacket for sure, put jacket on your first list. And after walk up and adventuring the rock , finally we reach at the top and the view was so amazing. The guide was prepare us a Eggs and he cook it on the natural steam hold from the volcano. And within 5 minutes the eggs was cooked and we enjoy it very much also our hot coffee and tea on the sunrise.

After visiting the coffee plantation at Kintamani Village, we continue to our last stop at the popular rice terrace in north of Ubud. Local call it Ceking rice terrace located in Tegalalang village but mostly tourist call it Tegalalang Rice Terrace, yes its the same and it just different name :-). And at this time we are lucky that the rice terrace was so green and it served us an amazing panorama .

Just beware with the shop attendant here , because is kind of they are little agresive when they try to sale some thing for you and the key is just say “Tidak Terimakasih ” which is mean no thank you. On this tour we did one way drop off to ubud and then next day from Ubud Purana Resort we did amazing rafting adventure at ayung river ubud, combine with visited the breathtaking view of rice terrace ceking in Tegalalang village , Visit Goa Gajah Temple the most famous Elephant Cave Temple and we also when to visit the waterfall of Tegenungan. And finishing our journey at the Batubulan village to enjoy the Balinese performance Kecak and Shang Hyang Jaran dance.

First i would like to say thank you to Mr. Morten and friend from Denmark for our great day tour in Ubud. Yes our trip was begin from Seminyak Square Hotel with last minutes booking from Mr Morten and friend to get drop off to Ubud to Purana Boutique Resot and within one hour and fourty minutes drive from seminyak, finally we arrive there and the special price to ubud from seminyak iam offer 220.000 idr one way drop off. And on the next day after i drop them at the hotel , Mr Morten was booked my services for a full day tour to visit ubud surrounding and do rafting adventure in the morning with special deal 450.000 idr for my services price.

On the day tour we start the journey at 09:00 am from Ubud purana boutique hotel , drive up to Payangan Village where is the start point of Ayung Rafting

After driving about one hour from Purana resort to Payangan, finally we arrive at the start point of ayung river rafting. Friendly welcoming by the staff and river guide at ayung river rafting office and start point . And then every one rapidly shettle the payment with the cost 30 usd per person included on price with lunch buffet indonesian food, insurrance, rafting equipment and also friendly rafting guide .

Rafting at ayung river is take about two hours duration from the start point to finish point in kedewatan village west of Ubud with 16 Km distance from the start point to finish point of ayung river rafting.

Friendly rafting guide give us instruction and trainee about the rafting code and how to pedal before we start the rafting, wearing all the safety equipment as life jacket, helmet, water proff bag, arms protection and also choice the great pedal stick then the amazing adventure was start.

After having so much fun on the river rafting, i have meet every one in the meeting point with all those bags of course because i asked every one to leave the bags in the car, because on the finish point make us easier, don’t have to get back to start point again to get back the bags on the locker.

With a big smile on everyone face i meet them at the finish point , welcome every to to a shower and change their clothe because on rafting is make us completly wet. And after shower and changing every one was having lunch with yummi indonesian food on buffet .

After lunch we continue to visit the most famous rice terrace of tegalalang , within half an hour we make it to reach at tegalalang rice terrace from kedewatan ubud. We don’t take the main road of ubud because at the afteenoon the main road of ubud will be so much traffic and i decided to pass by keliki village where is also on that road famous with the Jungle fish retreat and one resort i remember call puri sebali. We pass true rice field and hilli road make us faster and not finding any traffic at all.

Visiting the rice terrace in ubud tegalalang village there is ticket to purchase with tariff 10.000 idr per person , the ticket is included all insurrance and also free mineral water provided on ticket officer . Since the weather is so hot , a complimentary water is good for us. And this time of our visit there is one missing on the rice terrace as we couldn’t see the green rice on terrace because the farmer just start to replan the rice .

And also it was Indonesian independent day 17-8-2016 the farmer has put the flag of Indonesia in middle of rice field. Small trekking we did to exploring the rice terace , walk about 40 to 45 minutes to visit the other side of rice terrace on trekking tour . The big note for every one to prepare trekking on rice terrace is ” small Money ” the funny things is after paying the official ticket to make visit of the rice terrace we have to pay also the donation to the farmer to use the brigde and the farmer said the bridge was build by the farmer creativity and not by the official goverment. And now they asked 10.000 idr from every one who like to use the bridge to get to the top rice terrace. Well is wort to pay but it’s not that good suprice to have speending money again.. with the amazing view , all the ticket issue is paid for us.

After the rice terrace we continue to visit the Elephant cave temple or local famous name is Goa Gajah Temple . Located in the east side of Ubud where the local village call Bedulu. Very easy to find the temple because is located on beside the main street. And from Tegalalang rice terrace we travel drive about 40 minutes to get here included traffic .

Visiting the Goa Gajah Temple there is ticket 15.000 idr per person and there is sarong provided for visitor to wear as for respecting the area holy temple of Goa Gajah. Visiting the temple in Bali there is one of rule which is must be followed to avoid the bad luck which is ” women or girl on the menstruation or period time is for bidden to go in side the temple area” thats the rule. And also when we was in Goa Gajah temple we also whent to visit in side the cave, and found the Lingga of Tri Murti God as Balinese Hindu we call Brahma Wisnu and Ciwa .

after we visiting the Goa Gajah Temple , we continue our trip to visit Tegenungan waterfall on Kemenung Village , well located in Blahbatuh district south east of Ubud . Visiting the Tegenungan Waterfall there is ticket 10.000 idr per person and from Ubud to tegenungan waterfall is take about 20 minutes drive more less because the traffic is kind of heavy this week.

amazing view can be capture by camera from the view point and if you like to visit down the river as we do , then get ready for step on 72 stairs going down to the river side and bring some water for sure . And over all our adventure on the waterfall was fantastic.

late afternoon arround 18:00 Pm we continue our trip to visit the most wanted Balinese performance kecak and fire dance in Batubulan village , drive about half an hours from waterfall of tegenungan , finally we reach at Batubulan village on time where the performance is start at 18:30Pm and finish at 19:30 Pm the dance is telling us story about the Ramayana , and by the end of the dance great fire performance was played, amazing to see the dance step on big fire . and after the performance we hading back to Purana Resort in Ubud with lot of fun on day tour.

Begin our journey at 08.30 am we do a day tour to Ubud from Seminyak Royal Beach Hotel with special last minute notice on best price 450.000 idr on day tour. First thing i would like to say thank you to Mr. Robert and Mrs. Jesicca to choose and employed my service for private guide service in Seminyak.

In this opportunity we where visited the most popular attractions in Ubud as visiting green scenery of Tegenungan Waterfall, Visit the Balinese traditional house compound ,visit the Batuan Temple,visit the amazing rice terrace of Tegalalang ,visit the Holy water temple Tirta empul temple, having lunch at Pangkon local warung and also we where visiting the most funny place Monkey forest in Ubud and visit the last destination of the day on Pura Saraswati and Royal Palace in Ubud City center.

Drive one hour to the north east ubud direction from seminyak , we arrive at the first destination as we visiting the traditional Balinese house compund , located in peninjoan village where here we invited to see how is local Balinese structor house and seing the concept of Balinese traditional house.

There is serveral building surrounding the family house . Which is Bale Daje or gedong located in north side, Bale dauh building located on west side , Bale Dangin located in the east side, Bale delod the special on the south area and also north east area there is location of Family temple. Each building has different funtions and there is kind of local rule for who can stay and what is for the building also i can explain you more when we visit there . And visiting the local balinese house there is donation 10.000 idr rupiah which is we can support the local to keep their house and traditions.

Afterwards we visiting the Batuan Temple, the public village royal temple of Batuan Village, within short drive from traditional House we arrive at Batuan Temple. Upon arrival at Batuan Temple we get our sarong as the balinese traditional costume which is obligatory to wear to visiting the holy area.

In Batuan temple we allowed to visit in side the temple area , where we can see how and where is the ritual is begin in the temple, fell the defferent aura bettwen three side of the holy area make our visit to this temple as special. And visiting the Batuan temple there is donation 10.000 idr per person.

After we visiting the temple we where continue our trip to visit the tegenungan waterfall, the most excotiq natural waterfall well located on south east of Ubud.

Amazing view we can taking picture from the view point , and for adventure lover there is special way down to the river and waterfall side with easy access step to get down the river side. And visiting the Tegenungan Waterfall there is ticket 10.000 idr per person.

After enjoy the most amazing waterfall in south east ubud, we continue to visit the next of our destination which is Tirta Empul temple, well located on the north east side of Ubud.

The tirta empul temple is one of the holy water temple in Bali. Where the local Hindu taking spiritual bathing by the holy water . There is several defferent spring holy water and each holy water has different funtions on spiritual . Visiting the holiwater of tirta empul there is local ticket 15.000 idr per person and we get a free sarong to wear visiting the temple area. And for your advice, there is funny way to get back to the parking where we have to pass the market area , which is every one will asking you to buy thier stuff. But we can say “no thank you”.

Leave the Tirta Empul Temple we continue our trip to have a lunch at the rice terrace area and it has a balinese food serve on amazing view of rice terrace. The place we where is called Pangkon Bali Warung and Restautant the price of the food is same as local price and the food quailty is excellent.

After lunch we continue to visit the biggest rice terrace in the north side of Ubud. Commont name people call it Ceking Terracering or Tegalalang rice terrace.

Visiting the rice terrace there is ticket 10.000 idr per person and also there is possibility to visit and make a trekking down the rice terrace but there is extra cost for the bridge. The local farmer in rice terrace charge visitor who pass their bridge, the bridge is made from solid beton so is safe to cross on it. And also the farmer will asking donation and there is no ammount they will say but we can give 10.000 idr for the donation and enjoy the amazing trekking view on the rice field.

After the rice field we continue to visit the monkey forest in Ubud center. The tropical monkey welcome us with their friendly reaction.

There is holy water temple on down side beside the champuhan river ubud. Walk along the forest pass to the bridge in beside of the river is fell like we are on the middle of rain forest wild life sensation. The entress ticket in monkey forest ubud we can purchase on the gate and there is 3 gate which is located on the south of sivha temple, and east side and also in the west side behind the camplung sari hotel in ubud.

After the monkey forest on late afternoon where the weather is not so hot we continue our trip to visit the Royal palace of ubud .

There is view area visitor can access visiting the puri saron royal palace , jaba sisi ,jaba tengah. And jeroan not allowed because is private for royal family.

and then cross the street of royal palace there is locatoion of the traditional art market in the middle heart of Ubud.

then last stop we make to visit the Saraswati temple which is an easy access on short walk from the four junction ubud city center. There is donation box on the front of gate saraswati temple, and in saraswati temple we are as visitor not allowed to visit in side but we still can see the temple from the out side the temple due the temple is just for worship only. Then after it we heading back to hotel within 1 hour and 30 minutes drive then we reach back to seminyak from Ubud where we are so lucky there is no traffic at all on our way back to hotel from ubud to seminyak.

Kuda P Stable is one of the best and affordable price for ride a horse near seminyak and by the time we are finishing the route of tour with horse riding we continue to visit the Tanah Lot Temple , the famous rock temple on sea side .

Before we heading to tanah lot temple , the family of Tan Nguyen i drive decided to try the local warung for lunch along the way to tanah lot temple. We found warung Guek on the right side after the bridge of four junction kaba-kaba . The local Balinese food they served is so taste and clean most important we found. The price is same as local price and the food every one said lovely.

And after lunch we continue to visit the Tanah Lot temple, having short ride from warung guek to tanah lot temple and finally we reach at the entrance gate. The ticket in tanah lot temple is 30.000 idr per person for tourist and 20.000 idr for local or domestic visitor. Enjoy the visiting time and i have explain the story of the temple tanah lot also we having blessing by holy water under the rock side of Tanah Lot Temple.

After visiting the Tanah Lot temple we heading to south of Bali where is famous sunset view in Uluwatu Temple , driving about 2 Hours with included traffic from tanah lot make us reach there on time .

On our half way , bettwen seminyak to uluwatu temple we found the view point traffic and thats is not a big deal , reach at uluwatu temple at 16.00 pm at parking area after 2 hours drive from Tanah Lot temple to Uluwatu Temple .

Entering the uluwatu temple there is ticket entress fee 20.000 idr per person adult and children is same price . We get a borrowed a free sarong, which is obligatory to wear to visit the holy temple area , and in uluwatu temple there is a chiky monkey that make us have to wacth out our stuff, the monkey i see stole some chinese sun glases. Lucky i prepare a slingshot just to make the monkey scare. Iam not shut them 🙂 is kind of holy monkey local balinese hindu trust so no one allowed to heart the monkey in Uluwatu Temple. Just we need to becare full and stay away from the monkey in Uluwatu Temple.

After visiting arround the Uluwatu temple , finally is time to enjoy the Kecak and fire dance where is start from 18:00 pm and finish at 19:00 pm and the Kecak and fire monkey dance is taking breff story of the Ramayana. The ticket of kecak and fire dance performance is 100.000 idr per person and we can get the ticket on the front desk of ticket counter on beside the kecak dance performance. And once you get the ticket at 17:30 pm is better to get in to the stage where is the most beauty sunset on the same time with dance performance in Uluwatu temple, then get the top chair over looking to breattaking view of the indian ocean , is will be one of the unforgetable moment on your holiday attractions .

After finished the Kecak and Fire dance we continue our trip to the last destination as planed to visit the Jimbaran Bay for seafood dinner. Leave the Uluwatu temple to Jimbaran bay is take us about 30 minutes with with view traffic point and the heavy one is in four juntions of Nirmalla Supermarket in Peninsula Hills. And after it we made to visit the Jimbaran for dinner.

Speend some time for amazing dinner on sea side , with fresh pulled out seafood from the bay. There is many restaurant along the bay, as famous good cafe we where is in Ganesha Cafe , also popular with Lia Caffe , bendega cafe seafood.

All the restaurant and cafe is settup in sea side and romantic table with candle light dinner.

After dinner finally we heading back to hotel Villa B Sea side and our beautiful day we did finish at 22:00pm .
