Such nutmegs can not be found in other places in Bali, and thee existence at Sangeh is a mystery. The nut meg tree forest with extent of 10 hectares is a holy territory that is securitized by Sangeh Customary Village and its vicinity. The monkeys fell down together with hunks of mountain forest that were used to press Rahwana’s body, and then settled permanently in that forest
The other story also tells that a princess Mengwi kingdom named Mayangsari, who was smitten with love, faded to be engaged, finally fled to the nearby forest, and became a hermit. In her escape, she did not wear any sheet of dot so that she had to use her long hair to cover the most forbidden part of her body. She faced to each her dream, died mysteriously. The local community believed that the goddess now becomes Batari Mayangsari.

About Bali Botanical Garden

Bali Botanical Garden is officialy known as a Kebun Raya Eka Karya Bali. Eka Karya refers to this being thr first Botanic Garden which has been established following indonesian independence and thus to first to have been established entirely by Indonesian.

History Bali Botanical Garden

In 1958 senior Balinese official requested the departement now called the centre Biologocal Research and Development within the indonesia institute of sciences, to consider establishing a botanic garden with the dual roles of reserach institute and recreations park. The the director Prof. Dr. Kusnoto Setiodiwiriyo selectd a location covering 50 ha of reforested land held by the Goverments. On 15 july 1959 Bali Botanical Garden was officially established on the slopes of Tapak hill, Candikuning village an altitude of 1250-1400 meters above sea levels.

Bali Botanical Garden was originally established as collection of species of coniters (non flowering seeds plants or gymnosperma) from throughthe world and as a place for recreation, It was also equipped for scientific, cultural and tecnical activities. Development stopped around 1965 because of the insecurity of the period. If was not until 1970 that the garden began to be gradually rehabilitated. On 30 april 1976 the restoration was completed and as part of this area was increased to 129.2 ha and the function broadened from primarily a collection of conifer to include ex-situ conservationsof plants from high altitude seasonally wet dry areas in eastern indonesia.

In 1998 the Bali Botanical Garden covered an area 154.5 ha and contained about 16.000 plants collection, consisting of over 1500 species from over 320 genera and 155 families. Some of the specialist collections includes, orchids, ceremonial plants, medicinal plants, catus, ferns, bamboos and trees. The four main function of Bali Botanic Garden are, exploration, inventory, reserach, conservations, educations and Recreations. The institution offers a number scientific services and facilities in support of plant research and conservations including herbarium, library, glasshouses, nursery and plants registration database.

According to Republic Indonesia Forestry Minister decision written on the official letter no 493/Kpts-II/1995 that Bali West National Park own 19.002,89 ha which is consisted of 15.587,89 ha land and 3.415 ha ocean. West Bali National Park area is a green are spread out along the main road Denpasar – Gilimanuk – Singaraja about 150 kilometers. Topographic of this park own constant gradation between mount, hill, valley, bay and sea. The mountain area is involving up to 71% from the total park area as protected forest with multifarious faunas like deer, forest pig, lion, birth etc. meanwhile the flat area is about 29% located in north part of main road Gilimanuk – Singaraja until Java Sea.
If we look from the conception, this area is a Giri/Gunung or mounts which is completed by the forest (Wanagiri). According to Kidung Utama Tantri script there is a word mention Ning Wana Ukir which gives the direction that the Wana Giri philosophy is well written to describe the total of this world

Flora and Fauna at West Bali National Park

West Bali National Park own high potential of flora and fauna those are consisted of 14 variety of protected floras involving Sawo Kecik (Manilkara Kauki), Sono Keling (Dalbergia Latifolia). From the fauna, Jalak Bali Birth (Leucopsar Rothscildi) is one of the endemic fauna in Bali Island there are pure habitat found in this park along to Prapat Agung and surrounding area. Other faunas can be found at this park involving cow, deer, mouse deer, venison, wild cat, grey and black monkeys. Beside of the above animals, a couple of reptiles and other 60 rash of births also can be found. The condition of coral reef at this park is highly varied with unique combination and multifarious of habitats. In year 1998, it was recorded 110 kinds of coral including 22 mushroom corals and up to now, it was recorded that this park own 222 kinds of fish.

What to do at West Bali National Park ?

West Bali National Park is managed base on zone involving main zone, forest zone and exploitation zone. The main zone is absolutely protected and not allowed to change by the human activities except the research purpose. Forest Zone is the protector for Main Zone and able to do the activities like in Main Zone and limited tourism activities. Exploitation Zone able to do the activities like both zones, build the nature tourism facilities and other facilities to support the conservation.
