Ubud Royal Palace is an artistic cultural life center, while the traditional market is the symbol of local economics resident. The existence of Ubud Royal Palace as a palace is equipped by a Wantilan/auditorium that is a large building of meeting room and a banyan tree as shelter place at the daytime. The traditional market is the place of society economics and its existence is always border on palace as artistic cultural life center. It means that the both pole meeting is describing the dynamics of society and kingdom life.

The history of Bali’s royal ruling families goes as far back as the 10th century but it wasn’t until the 1300’s that they became historically renown. In 1343, the Majapahit Empire took hold after the Javanese king defeated the Balinese king. Their rule marked the arrival of Javanese Hindu culture, which is still evident today in architecture, the arts, literature, dance and the theatre. A few Balinese villages remained aloof from this change, however, with the rise of Islam across Indonesia, the Majapahit Empire finally fell and Bali became independent at the end of the 15th century. Many of the Javanese aristocracy and key members of the creative society took refuge on the island and the period became known as Bali’s Golden Age.

Ubud has been a “royal town” for over a hundred years. Its princes, who bear the title “Tjokorda” or “Agung” still live in traditional palaces, called “Puris”. Be aware, however, that every place called “puri” is not a royal palace. The word has been used quite liberally of late. Alsobe aware that there is not one palace in Ubud, but many, most of them clustered around the main cross-roads near the Bud market. There are several other “royal” towns in the Bud area, too, with their own palaces, most of which have close family ties to the Bud Tjokordas. A web of connections is maintained by incidental and arranged marriages among the respective offspring of princes in Sayan, Pejeng, Singapadu, Peliatan, and Payangan’s puris.

Although the old Balinese feudal system was superseded by the Dutch colonial government more that eighty years ago, the Tjokordas still retain a special role in Ubud society. Many leadership roles, both sacred and secular are held by Tjokordas. They also figure prominently in the local business community, arts institutions, and professional circles. While no formal power is automatically granted to someone because they come from a puri, the Ubud royals still command respect solely on the basis of their heredity. They also command respect from some quarters on the basis of their rather disproportionate wealth.

The Royal palaces have long been the largest landholders in the area. They used to manifest this role in a largely “custodial” way, managing vast tracts of rice-growing land for the benefit of the community and the temples. In recent times, however, with the advent of western models of land ownership, many palaces have developed or sold landholdings to augment their personal wealth–sometimes conspicuously. In pre-colonial Bali, palaces were the primary patrons of art, music, dance and literature. The Ubud palaces consciously continue this tradition. They act as repositories of traditional culture, and develop artistic endeavours throughout the area, much to the benefit of both Ubudians and visitors.

The Tjokordas are no longer the physical embodiment of The State, they are just private citizens, with the same concerns as other private citizens, plus a few more. Accordingly, the Ubud palaces are essentially just family homes, and none have yet been turned into museums of public tourist attractions. While some of them are fine examples of traditional architecture, none are “historical” in terms of age. In fact, most are pretty new. The oldest Ubud palace was located a little to the east of Pura Dalem Ubud, above the main road. It collapsed in an earthquake early this century, and nothing remains but a flat place with traces of foundation here and there.

It is important to treat the monkeys with respect as this forest is heir home and you are a guest in it. Please remain on the paved paths. The monkeys may become aggressive if you invade their private areas ( wanara Wana staff and researcher may occasionally be seen in this areas please do not follow them.
It can often seen how the Balinese Macaques are cracking open coconuts. If available they like to eat bananas and papayas, too. Once taken please leave the fruit with the monkeys. If you with to feed the macaques please do so carefully, and if they take food from you, please do not attempt to retrieve it back. It is also of great importance that you treat the trees, the plants and other animals and structures within the Sacred Monkey Forest with great respect.

Based on an analysis of a manuscript called Pura Purana ( meaning history of a Pura ) which is considered a holy writing the temple was built around 14th century during the reign of kings with the palace in Pejeng area. If this assumption is taken the establishment of the temple would be before 1343 AD, not at the beginning of Gelgel Palace which is far behind around 17th century. There are three temples in The Sacred Monkey Forest namely :

Pura Dalem Agung, located at the south western corner of the main forest area. This temple is the most prominent in Monkey Forest
The Holy Bathing Temple located down steps close to the water stream. This temple is divided into 3 courtyards ( mandalas ) with pools.
The Prajapati temple with cemetery located at the southernmost of the area.

Balinese Macaques at Ubud Monkey Forest

he monkeys that live in this sanctuary are called Balinese macaques, also known as long tail macaques. Their scientific name is macaca fascicularis and aside from humans, macaques are the most widespread and successful of all primates.
About 300 macaques currently reside in the monkey forest. There are approximately 35 adults males, 95 adult females and 170 young. These macaques live primarily in three clusters of females and males. Each of these groups tends to use different areas of the forest at different ties of the day. All macaques use all of the forest. Conflicts sometimes arises when two groups are in same area. Adult males weight up to 8 to 10 kgs and have large canines teeth, broad shoulders and facial hair that resembles a mustache. The adult females are smaller then the males ( 4-8 kgs ) and have long facial hair resembling beads. Balinese macaques group is centered around groups of related females called “matriline” Male macaques usually migrate in from other area and attempt to associate themselves with the female matriline Both males and females, have st of dominance relationship, but they are not always clear or consistent.
Mating can take place all year round but most infants are born during the months of May – August. Macaques mothers range from very protective to very permissive with their infants. Many females who are not the mother spend time holding and caring for infants. Sometimes you will even see an adult male “mothering” as well.

Drive one hour to the north east ubud direction from seminyak , we arrive at the first destination as we visiting the traditional Balinese house compund , located in peninjoan village where here we invited to see how is local Balinese structor house and seing the concept of Balinese traditional house.

Afterwards we visiting the Batuan Temple, the public village royal temple of Batuan Village, within short drive from traditional House we arrive at Batuan Temple. Upon arrival at Batuan Temple we get our sarong as the balinese traditional costume which is obligatory to wear to visiting the holy area.

In Batuan temple we allowed to visit in side the temple area , where we can see how and where is the ritual is begin in the temple, fell the defferent aura bettwen three side of the holy area make our visit to this temple as special. And visiting the Batuan temple there is donation 10.000 idr per person.

After we visiting the temple we where continue our trip to visit the tegenungan waterfall, the most excotiq natural waterfall well located on south east of Ubud.

After enjoy the most amazing waterfall in south east ubud, we continue to visit the next of our destination which is Tirta Empul temple, well located on the north east side of Ubud.

The tirta empul temple is one of the holy water temple in Bali. Where the local Hindu taking spiritual bathing by the holy water . There is several defferent spring holy water and each holy water has different funtions on spiritual . Visiting the holiwater of tirta empul there is local ticket 15.000 idr per person and we get a free sarong to wear visiting the temple area. And for your advice, there is funny way to get back to the parking where we have to pass the market area , which is every one will asking you to buy thier stuff. But we can say “no thank you”.

Leave the Tirta Empul Temple we continue our trip to have a lunch at the rice terrace area and it has a balinese food serve on amazing view of rice terrace. The place we where is called Pangkon Bali Warung and Restautant the price of the food is same as local price and the food quailty is excellent.

After lunch we continue to visit the biggest rice terrace in the north side of Ubud. Commont name people call it Ceking Terracering or Tegalalang rice terrace.

Visiting the rice terrace there is ticket 10.000 idr per person and also there is possibility to visit and make a trekking down the rice terrace but there is extra cost for the bridge. The local farmer in rice terrace charge visitor who pass their bridge, the bridge is made from solid beton so is safe to cross on it. And also the farmer will asking donation and there is no ammount they will say but we can give 10.000 idr for the donation and enjoy the amazing trekking view on the rice field.

After the rice field we continue to visit the monkey forest in Ubud center. The tropical monkey welcome us with their friendly reaction.

There is holy water temple on down side beside the champuhan river ubud. Walk along the forest pass to the bridge in beside of the river is fell like we are on the middle of rain forest wild life sensation. The entress ticket in monkey forest ubud we can purchase on the gate and there is 3 gate which is located on the south of sivha temple, and east side and also in the west side behind the camplung sari hotel in ubud.

After the monkey forest on late afternoon where the weather is not so hot we continue our trip to visit the Royal palace of ubud .

There is view area visitor can access visiting the puri saron royal palace , jaba sisi ,jaba tengah. And jeroan not allowed because is private for royal family.

and then cross the street of royal palace there is locatoion of the traditional art market in the middle heart of Ubud.

then last stop we make to visit the Saraswati temple which is an easy access on short walk from the four junction ubud city center. There is donation box on the front of gate saraswati temple, and in saraswati temple we are as visitor not allowed to visit in side but we still can see the temple from the out side the temple due the temple is just for worship only. Then after it we heading back to hotel within 1 hour and 30 minutes drive then we reach back to seminyak from Ubud where we are so lucky there is no traffic at all on our way back to hotel from ubud to seminyak.

Yesterday we when visited ubud as our mission to touch the culture tradition and wonderful of ubud village on a day tour from seminyak.

We start our trip to ubud from seminyak at 08:30am and meet up at Lobby hotel Grand Hardys Seminyak . The first destination we do visited is Batubulan Village. After driving almost one hour we finally arrive at Batubulan Village and there we visiting the Barong and kris dance which is the most sacred balinese performance and it start from 09:30am until 10:30 am enjoy the Balinese Barong and kris dance performance there is ticket we can purchase directly on counter with the price 100.000 idr per person.

We also welcomed to take a picture with the balinese costumed dancer for the great memory of our visiting the Batubulan village.

After the performance we when to visiting the oldest temple of Batuan builded on 944 centurys ago. Its the village temple which is one of the important temple as balinese hindu in batuan village pray to the God of Brahma and Vishnu as Trinity God as Brahma Vishnu and Siva Lord. Visiting the Batuan Temple is there an donation 10.000 idr per person and sarong as balinese costume wearing to visiting the temple is provided at the ticket counter.

After the Batuan temple , we where continue to visit the Balinese house compound in Batuan Village, seeing how is strucktor of balinese house which is impossible to find it again in seminyak

Visiting the Balinese traditional house where is the local still leave here there is ticket donation 10.000 idr for all of us. And also we allowed to visit the family temple in the balinese house and iam very happy to explain of funtions of each building at the temple to all of our tour group participants.

Getting afternoon , its an lunch time everyone excited to try the tipycal food in ubud where is very popular of their crispy duck, andni recommend to every one to try in one of the local restaurant call Bebek Teba Sari whcih is located in beside of rice terrace in outskirt of ubud

After lunch we continue to visit the most popular waterfall in Tegenungan Village, the ticket in tegenungan waterfall is 10.000 idr per person , also possible to go down to swim at the waterfall but this time of our visit no one was bring a swim clothe so we just enjoy the amazing view of green scenery of waterfall. And even the beauty natural flower invited the butterfly come arround to get the honey flower which is amazing view.

After we enjoying visit wonderfull.of tegenungan waterfall , we continue to visit the new butterfly park in south east of ubud where is located in Kemenuh village , tropical butterfly is flying around the beauty flower garden in butterfly park . The area of new butterfly park is not that Big but the collection of butterfly they have is amazing incredible , it has a process from larva to become a butterfly showen on the park carrentine side.

and visiting the butterfly park there is ticket 100.000 idr per person , the friendly guide on butterfly park willing to give us informatio about the butterfly proccess life and grow to become sweet paper flying on the flower side. Over all it was interesting to see and is awesome to visit this park on our ubud tour.

The next stop we did make it to visit Goa Gajah temple , one of the oldest temple was found on archeology site. Beautyful garden is hidden on behind the holy temple area and also we allowed to visit in side the cave . See the arca of lord Brahma Visnu and Siva God also in the west side of the cave we can see the old sacred statue of Ganehsa Lord.

Finishing visit the temple, we continue to driver to the north of Ubud where is famous rice terrace located in tegalalang village . Is take us about 30 minutes from goa gajah temple to get to rice terrace and the ticket we purchase directly on arrival there and is cost 10.000 idr per person for ticket in rice terrace.

trekking adventure is can be done in hour treeking, and for trekking in the rice terrace there is special access with small aley to get down, get closer to the scenic point of rice terrace . And trekking here it has 2 time donations place is stead of official ticket we paid. First donation after the bridge is 10.000 idr for all of us for local farmer who build the bridge and another donation will be asked by the other farmer to cross their rice field with another 10.000 idr donation.

Learn how the rice grow and how long it take from start planing a baby rice plan that what education we will get there on tropical rice terrace in north of Ubud.

After the rice terrace tour , we continue to visit ubud central, where is located in 8 km south of rice terrace. Ubud market and the palace we visited , there is no ticket in the palace and also visiting ubud market we have to save in mind one tips” never ask the price if you don’t buy it” .

the shop attendant is kind of little agresive to attract the visitor buying their stuff . But in ubud market you can make negotiation and the discount from the first price can be up to 40 persen.

So after the market and palace of ubud finally we finishing our day adventure to ubud. And then we having get back to seminyak within one and half hours drive from ubud to seminyak again. Thanks to Jessica and group to give me a chance to drive and be your private guide in seminyak bali. On this opportunity adventure we did one of the best day with enjoy the white water rafting in ayung river well located in west north of ubud centre.

Begin our trip at 08:00 am from Harris Hotel Seminyak and every one has already having big super awesome breakfast serve by the best cheff in Hariss Hotel , it fill up lot of energy for our day tour adventure. The first place of our adventure destination is Ayung River by two hour drive from seminyak to ubud finally we reach at Ayung river start rating point.

Friendly staff on payung rafting company welcoming us and we purchase the ticket on the front desk ,cost us 30 Usd per person for rafting that is included all risk insurance, australian standard equipment and profesional trained rafting guide give us a trainee and assist our great rafting at ayung river. Thats is super deal price we paid directly as walkin guest and its much better then book it true travel agent where the price can be swealing .

Two hours and half we where enjoy the great rafting at ayung river, big volcanic rock , waterfall and amazing green of scenery along the ayung river is spoiled our vision while the rafting, its one of unforgettable memory on adventure.

And finally arrive at the finish point, and we take a shower and changed wet clothe and indonesian buffet lunch is served combaine with fresh tropical fruits salad is one of the best meal we had on our adventure.

At 14:00 pm after lunch we continue our adventure to the north direction as the following Volcano Batur direction to go, and within one hour drive finally we arrive at Batur Volcano.

Amazing view welcoming us with a green scenery , some time is true the view is look like the picture but it’s real its an active volcano here . The ticket enjoy the panorama of Batur volcano is cost us 30.000 idr per person and we continue to visit the best view point after the payment ticket purchased.

Fell not enough with the amazing view, and we decided to visit the most wanted natural Hot spring water under of Batur Volcano. An volcanic natural spring water and settup well by the local village call Toya Devisya .

Swiming on hot spring water and spoiled on breattaking view combine hit by fresh welcome drink make the mussle refresh after the rafting at ayung river. Over all we are very enjoy the day adventure we did . The entress fee visiting the toya devisya hot spring water in batur volcano we paid 150.000 idr per person which is worte with the complimentary they provided us with Towel,suite bathroom,locker,and also welcoming drink.

After the hot spring we drive up back again, the road pass true little village and also kind of hilly . And is fine with our powerfull car Toyota SUV drive us comfortable discover under the volcanic area, then our destination next is the Coffee plantations.

After half hour drive finally we reach at Coffee plantation, it has an amazing super friendly people welcoming our visit on thier farming. His name is wayan duwi the local farmer

He explain us how the process of bali coffee making and also he showing us how the animal luwak eating and selected the coffee bean perfectly as famous coffee in bali call Luwak Coffee. Also we had a tester which is serve us as welcome drink at their farm. And over all our visit on the coffee farm was awesome great. Thank’s wayan duwi !

And trip continue to our last stop at Tegalalang Rice terrace, late afternoon having less tourist and give us more space to enjoy the great panorama of the rice terrace

The ticket visiting the rice terrace tegalalang in north of ubud is only 10.000 idr and also included insurrance. This time we not doing trekking at the rice terrace because we just having great shower at hot spring water .

And after it we drive back to hotel in seminyak on late afternoon.
